Wow, that is one beautiful building! Is there really only 3 classrooms in it though?

Only 3 class-rooms!!! What are the rest of the rooms? Ping-pong and foozball rooms? :) Just kidding of course.

How was it coming back from the Carolinas back to the cold north? I think you made the right choice, temperature wise. Chicago was probably a mite cooler than Greenville. It got down to -30 degrees Celsius here one morning!

Laura: It seems as though these two lovebirds must have experienced a breakdown on the way back from South Carolina. Perhaps they're huddling together in a hardly romantic manner in a Pennsylvania snowdrift?

Instead of 'plagiarizing' his blog, as Curt claims, I'm constrained now to write it for him.

Laura said...

Oh, no! Do you think the spring temperatures will thaw their snowdrift? (Well, we’re talking spring up north, so it might be a while.) Don’t worry, though. Not having his own ideas to write down, I’m sure Curt will be extremely thankful for yours. In fact, he’s probably thankful for them most of the time anyway.

My Dear Laura:
If nothing else, this may be the opportunity to compensate for Curt's flawed attempts to convey an understanding of supreme beauty. (No offense to Jen of course: she really is very beautiful, Curt just somehow can't seem to recognize ultimate beauty when he is confronted by it). Where can one begin to restore an understanding of something so delicate and fragile in the face of a failure of such magnitude?

Jeremy said...

Laura:
In the wake of a failure as catastrophic as Curt's, my own efforts will forever fall flat, a valiant yet hopelessly inept and failed undertaking.

So, in the face of such desperation and despondency, I can only turn to you, and dare to hope that through your own presence on this blog beauty itself will deign to show grace to those who have so dreadfully offended it.

Laura said...

Jeremy, I think we need to drop the subject of beauty. It's something only you and Curt can discuss. Jen and I will absent ourselves. That is, it seems Jen has already absented herself in the snowdrift, and I threaten to follow . . .

However, I quite agree about the need to do something about this dormant blog. Should we call the blog police and make a missing-blogger report?

Laura:
It seems as though we have encountered the first 'taboo' issue in our relationship: beauty! What are we going to talk about now?

Speaking of beauty, you'll have to ask Matt to perform his Madame Castafiore impersonation at some point. It's been years since his operatic soprano voice has delightfully shrilled through the sound waves, but no doubt it is as robust, and comical, as it was a decade ago.

Perhaps Matt inadvertently gave a Madame Castafiore shriek when he preached in Sheboyigan (sp?) today?

Laura said...

Oh, I can't wait to hear Madame Castafiore! I think we'll have to go and visit Matt's blog soon and have a word with him about it. Did you say that the impersonations were typically Sunday morning events? The Van Dyken household must have been full of intriguing shrieks on those days, what with Matt's operatic tendencies and a certain someone else calling for back rubs . . .

Jeremy said...

Yes! Presumably, someone else has stepped into the back-rubbing role graciously... or perhaps not so graciously. The poor girl... she must feel absolutely lost.

wowzers this is quite the dialogue b/t Jeremy and Laura!! i didn't read it but maybe they will be up this summer and we can have a reunion!!?? Curt and Jen i linked you to my blog, is that ok?? Hope you're all doing well!! Love carole

Laura:
Did you have a recent mishap that resulted in a rendezvous with Jen in the snowdrift? Should I ride out on my horse to rescue you?

Laura said...

Jeremy, with the recent heat wave (I know you think that means 40-degree weather, but it's actually in the 80s here!!!), the snowdrift has melted; and Jen and I have been hunting for other shelter. You are most welcome to ride in, as long as you come in shining armor. :)

Jeremy said...

I will be riding in... in a few weeks, to see you, Curt & Jen, and a host of others! Only, I'm afraid that my horse will be a Boeing 757, and my armor will be several layers of winter coats, clothes, and trousers, all to protect me from the dreadful cold...

Laura said...

Jeremy, be sure to bring your boots and parka too. The white color you might see on the ground will be flower petals from the cherry trees, but I'm afraid you'll mistake it for snow! :)

Curt and Jen said...

Wow, we turn our backs for just a moment and suddenly our blog is desecrated by a couple of lovebirds(snowbirds?)

Hope to see you soon perhaps? Will you be coming here to the land of the living for the weekend of the 22? Laura you are most welcome to come. Jeremy you are too, I guess. We are getting the backyard ready for you Jer (mowing the grass). :D Laura, we'll find something hopefully a bit more respectable.

And Carole -- good to hear from you! Yes we do hope to be there for the gathering on the 17th!

Ruth said...

Ahem! New post!!!

Jeremy said...

Curt, my dear brother, you turned your back for just one moment? It has been months since you posted to your blog, and if it weren't for the hint that I dropped Jen, it would have been many more.

Laura and I will be there on the weekend of May 22 D.V. Should you hear a couple vigorously coughing and clearing their throats somewhere in the vast sea of people that will be at your ordination sermon, you should know that it will be Laura and I, and that you have said something completely heretical.

Laura, the boots and the parka will be completely unnecessarily. Not only will I have the thought of you to keep me warm, I'll have your actual presence!

Laura said...

Hi, Curt and Jen. Don't worry. I'll try to keep Jeremy in line during the ordination sermon! Btw, do you preach then, Curt, or does another minister take the service? Ah, and to sleep elsewhere than the newly mown grass! :)

As for boots and parkas, Jeremy, I agree that they will be unnecessary, but not for the reasons you cite. After all, I seem to remember a certain visit to Ann Arbor when the visitor requested the visitee to turn up the heat (that is, the thermostat). Apparently, that visitee doesn't always fulfill her role of parka. Be warned!!

Curt and Jen said...

In terms of warmings and warnings, it goes down to 7 degrees above celsius here this weekend. So you might wants lots of parkas and warm thoughts.

And Laura, be relieved because I don't preach during the ordination. But I'm sure, Jer, that Rev.'s Short & Bouwers, who will each be delivering an address will appreciate your coughs and giggles.

And I was wondering if a short recital might be appropriate at the end of the service. I was thinking that maybe Miss Laura could play the piano and Jer could sing. I was thinking perhaps Habanera by Bizet.

Jeremy said...

Curt, my dear brother:
I think a game of smoker (aka broker, croker, hoker, etc.) would be more appropriate than Habanera. Coming from you on the evening of your ordination service, it would have an especially symbolic meaning, and would be poetic justice for all of those cold hours we spent in the root cellar. Of course, an invitation to Dad to participate would be most in order as well! Or perhaps, we could go into the basement of your house to recreate the secretive and underground nature of our past exploits?

Laura said...

Habanera from Carmen?? Where on earth did you come up with that??? I am extremely impressed, not to mention mystified about what, exactly, the suggestion is supposed to mean. On second thoughts, perhaps it's best not to know. :) I fear the next performance you'll advise...perhaps The Taming of the Shrew?

Curt and Jen said...

Here's where you get unimpressed (and sadly I don't think that Jeremy would be able to improve on this). I simply like the piece for how it sounds. I have no idea what the words are or what they mean. I don't know the context, other than its an opera piece?? My wife would know a bit more, I'm sure. But thinking about Jeremy singing would be splendid. Probably the quickest way to evacuate a building. For that reason I wish it to be done after the ordination.
But your question(and you mention of the Taming of the Shrew!)makes me wonder if perhaps I should check into what the piece is all about... and perhaps I should hold my tongue!

Laura said...

Yes, indeed, Curt, I think you landed in the soup with that one! :)

Curt and Jen said...

Oh bother. I don't know much about music, I just enjoy listening to some. In fact, I have a bad habit of wanting to have music in the background when I work, even though I know it usually hampers my ability to think.
Anyways, we are so sad that you can't come! We were so looking forward to meeting you in person. But we understand the circumstances and wouldn't want to stand in the way. Hope it all goes well for you and wish for another future opportunity.
